You will find a working solution to almost every problem thrown at you, the knack is to keep the business objectives and bigger picture constantly in the back of your mind, so your solutions are not only working but effective and applicable.
John first heard about Tidy after discussing Nathan’s experience at Tidy. He highly recommended Tidy and prompted John to attend the BESA (Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Science Association) internship, where Nathan was presenting with Kevin Mann about working at Tidy.
The most interesting project John worked on was documentation of the preliminary workflow (and optimisation model)of a new Tidy product, which addressed the concerns of a Tidy customer. The base version of that product, TidyCPQ, has since been developed and announced.
John was most surprised by the ease with which Tidy inducted new interns into the culture, affording them the environment to work efficiently, creatively, and enjoyably with team leaders and other interns.
The most memorable moment of his internship was the refreshing walks with the entire office.
“We could clear our minds about our projects while hunting for cute cats in the neighbourhood.”
John describes his internship experience as:
Impactful: The work I did has lots of actionable potential for improving business outcomes, and in some cases, this potential has already been exploited. Despite my position as an intern, I was doing really important work for the company.
Supportive: My team leader, Aqeel, was always available to help and point me in the right direction. He was also very open to my ideas, affording me the chance to evaluate the best solution according to my understanding.
Educational: During my work, I was able to learn about several new techniques outside of those taught at university. I was also able to significantly strengthen my existing technical skills, specifically data manipulation using Python, which was required for essentially every project.
John’s advice for future interns is:
“You will find a working solution to almost every problem thrown at you, the knack is to keep the business objectives and bigger picture constantly in the back of your mind, so your solutions are not only working but effective and applicable.”
He is most excited to develop his professional communication skills.
“I practiced it a large amount during the internship as efficient and professional communication leaves a great impression on customers and supervisors and minimises confusion and time wasted.”
For the year ahead, John is most looking forward to working with Tidy during his Part IVProject. The project is to develop new proprietary techniques, adding onto theTidyCPQ product with massive commercialisation potential.
