Intern Stories

Gavin

University of Auckland

Bachelor of Engineering with Honours | Software Engineering

I was surprised by how quickly I managed to learn the stack

Gavin was first brought on as a backend engineering intern in 2022. Under the product engineering lead's wing, he spent the winter holidays developing his backend abilities, but migrated towards the frontend over summer as more work became available.

On the most surprising part of his experience, Gavin said,

"I was surprised by how quickly I managed to learn the stack because it was all pretty new to me."

His supervisors agreed that he's a quick and dynamic learner.

"He's pretty willing to try pretty much anything, even trying his hand at some photoshopping at one point! He hopped onto the frontend train roughly halfway through his internship and he got on board pretty quick which was great because he increased our (wo)manpower."

Gavin's most memorable moment of his internship was heading to Tauranga for Tidy's biannual "Office Week."

"The office week was a truly remarkable experience. I had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with my fellow colleagues. The various activities were immensely enjoyable and effectively imbued the week with a joyous ambiance, despite the fact that we were still engaged in our professional duties." (He may have outsourced his answer to ChatGPT).

Gavin's advice for future interns is to ask lots of questions. When probed to elaborate, he simply says, "Because they get you the answers."

While completing his studies, Gavin works full-time at Tidy, where he assists the team in product development and continues to refine his skills in both the frontend and backend.
